What to Expect During the Custom Crating Process

When it comes to shipping high-value, fragile, or oversized items, standard shipping just does not cut it! That is where custom crating comes in. At Crate This, we specialize in designing and building crates that are tailored to the specific needs of each item that we handle. But the question is, what exactly does the custom crating process involve? Here is a step-by-step overview of what you can expect when you work with our team.

Initial Consultation

Our process always begins with a conversation. Whether you are shipping a single item or coordinating a larger business move, we’ll gather information about the dimensions, weight, fragility, destination, and value of your items. This helps us understand exactly what level of protection is needed. For international shipments, we’ll ask about compliance requirements like ISPM-15 regulations

On-Site or In-Shop Evaluation

Depending on your location and shipping needs, we’ll either come to you for an on-site assessment or arrange for your items to be brought to our facility. On-site crating is ideal for oversized or difficult-to-move equipment, and our mobile crating team will be able to handle everything on location.

Custom Crating Design

Next, our experienced team will design a crate specifically for your shipment. We consider many aspects such as shock absorption, support, humidity, and pressure based on the item’s characteristics and travel route. If your shipment is going overseas, we use heat-treated, stamped lumber to meet international standards. For delicate or irregularly shaped objects, we may design internal supports, foam padding, or cushioning to ensure the item stays secure during transit.

Build and Prep

Once the design is approved, we construct the crate using high-quality wood and durable fasteners. Every crate is built with longevity in mind, strong enough to handle warehouse transfers, container loading, and cross-border inspections. If needed, we will also include moisture barriers, shock indicators, and other custom features to ensure your item is protected.

Packing & Securing

Now it is time to load and secure your item inside the crate. Whether it’s heavy machinery, fine art, or sensitive electronics, we take great care in stabilizing the item using foam, blocking, or bracing. We take extra precautions to ensure that nothing shifts or moves during transport!

Delivery or Shipment

Finally, we seal up the crate and prepare it for pickup, storage, or delivery to a freight container. If you are arranging shipping through our trusted freight forwarding network, we’ll coordinate all the necessary steps to ensure your crate reaches its destination safely on schedule. For international shipments, we also provide documentation assistance and tracking options to keep you informed throughout the journey.

Peace of Mind, Delivered

At Crate This, our goal is to make shipping safe, simple, and stress-free. By handling every part of the custom crating process in-house, with precision and care, you can rest assured knowing your shipment is in good hands.
