Choosing the right shipping protection can make the difference between a smooth delivery and a costly freight damage claim. For businesses shipping equipment, machinery, electronics, trade show materials, or other valuable items, the most common options are palletizing, LTL crating, and full custom crating.
Each option has a different purpose. The best choice depends on what you are shipping, how fragile it is, how far it is going, and how many times it may be handled in transit.
Palletizing means securing freight to a wooden, plastic, or composite pallet so it can be moved by forklift or pallet jack. Items are typically strapped, wrapped, or banded to the pallet.
Palletizing is often best for durable, boxed, or uniformly shaped items that do not need full enclosure. It can be a cost-effective choice when the shipment is sturdy enough to handle normal freight movement.
However, palletizing does not fully protect items from impact, moisture, stacking pressure, or side damage. If the freight is fragile, oversized, irregularly shaped, or high value, a pallet alone may not be enough.
LTL crating is used when freight will move through a less-than-truckload shipping network. In LTL shipping, freight from multiple customers is combined in one truck, which means shipments may be loaded, unloaded, transferred, and handled several times before delivery.
A crate gives the shipment more structure and protection than a pallet alone. LTL crating can help protect against side impact, shifting freight, forklift contact, and damage from repeated handling.
This option is often useful for machinery, commercial equipment, electronics, fixtures, displays, and other items that need stronger protection but may not require a highly specialized crate design.
Full custom crating is designed around the exact dimensions, weight, fragility, and shipping conditions of the item. The crate may include blocking, bracing, foam padding, vapor barrier protection, heat shrink wrapping, or other protective materials.
Custom crating is usually the best choice for high-value, delicate, oversized, or irregularly shaped freight. It is also important for international shipments, heavy machinery, medical equipment, aerospace components, artwork, and sensitive electronics.
Because the crate is built around the shipment, it can reduce movement inside the container and provide a higher level of protection during transport.
Choose palletizing when: the item is durable, boxed, easy to stack, and not highly sensitive to impact.
Choose LTL crating when: the shipment will move through an LTL freight network and needs added protection from repeated handling.
Choose full custom crating when: the item is fragile, expensive, oversized, irregularly shaped, moisture-sensitive, or difficult to replace.
Before selecting a shipping method, consider the item’s weight, dimensions, value, fragility, destination, and handling risk. A low-cost packing method can become expensive if it leads to damage, delays, or replacement costs.
For businesses shipping important freight, the safest approach is to match the packaging to the risk. Palletizing works for simple freight. LTL crating adds protection for freight moving through shared carrier networks. Full custom crating provides the highest level of fit, support, and protection for shipments that cannot afford to arrive damaged.
