International standards for shipping have a large impact on imports and exports. For example, many countries require the ISPM-15 stamp or “bug stamp” for any shipments leaving the United States. Understanding international regulations can greatly decrease issues when shipping goods internationally. In this article we will go over the importance and requirements of the ISPM-15 stamp as well as other international shipping standards. Why Wood Needs To Be Heat-Treated

new crates made at Crate This

The reason international shipping crates must have the ISPM-15 stamp, is because of the risk of pests runing local ecosystems. Living organisms when introduced to new ecosystems can quickly cause problems. Because many insects and other bugs will often live in wood, like termites, the international community requires that all wooden crates and pallets be treated before they are shipped internationally. This can prevent pests from spreading to different countries and areas that they are not native to. For this reason wood used for international shipping must be heat-treated in order to prevent pests from living inside the wood and accidentally being shipped overseas.

What Happens When Crates Do Not Meet International Standards?

If a crate arrives in a foreign port without an ISPM-15 stamp, the local authorities have the right to destroy the shipment, fumigate it, or send it back. This can cause huge issues for a company’s supply chain. Aside from causing delays, destroyed goods can have a large impact on your business. Because of this, it is of paramount importance that any wood used to shipping your goods internationally be properly labeled and treated against pests.
